The Challenge: This collaboration with Johns Hopkins University focused on developing a clear, meaningful, and impactful visual identity for the CHASM (Children and Adults with Severe Malaria) clinical study in Zambia. The goal of the project was to create branding that not only represented the scientific and medical importance of the study, but also communicated the human-centered mission behind the initiative. The resulting identity was designed to feel approachable, trustworthy, and globally conscious while remaining visually strong enough to support research communications, community outreach, and institutional partnerships.
Chasm
At the center of the branding is a logo that symbolizes connection, access, and support. Its visual concept reflects CHASM’s mission to bridge the healthcare divide between individuals who have access to quality medical treatment and those who face barriers due to economic, geographic, or systemic challenges. By emphasizing the idea of connection and equity, the branding reinforces the program’s dedication to improving outcomes for vulnerable populations affected by severe malaria.
The design approach balanced simplicity with purpose, ensuring the identity could be easily recognized across multiple platforms and audiences, including healthcare professionals, researchers, local communities, and international partners. Careful attention was given to creating a system that felt culturally respectful and socially impactful while maintaining the professionalism expected of a major clinical research initiative.
Through thoughtful typography, symbolism, and visual storytelling, the CHASM brand communicates hope, progress, and collaboration. The project ultimately serves as more than just a logo or design system it acts as a visual representation of the study’s broader mission to reduce disparities in malaria care, strengthen healthcare accessibility, and support life-saving research efforts in Zambia and beyond.
